AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens Lady Hornets beat Lindale 4-2 in soccer action

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets improved to 5-5-3 and 2-0 in District 31-4A soccer with a 4-2 win over Lindale Wednesday night at Bruce Field.

Senior Gabby Lawyer scored a hat trick, with two of her goals coming in the first five minutes of the contest on assist by Kyra Robison and Melinda Green. Lawyer added her final goal at the 21:37 mark of the opening half.

In the second half, Robison scored on an assist by freshman Makayle Traxson.

The Lady Hornets will return to the pitch tonight at 7 p.m. in Whitehouse.

Athens soccer falls to Lindale, 1-0

The Athens Hornets dropped to 3-9 on the season and 0-2 in District 31-4A soccer with a 1-0 loss to Lindale on Wednesday night at Eagle Stadium.

The Athens defense gave up the goal with six minutes left in the contest.

AHS returns to the pitch for the first game of a two-game homestand tonight at 7 p.m. against Whitehouse at Bruce Field.

The Hornets will face Mabank on Tuesday night at Bruce Field with the junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m.

Mabank falls to Kilgore, 55-43

The Mabank Lady Panthers lost, 55-43, to the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs in the Class 3A, Region II bi-district round of the playoffs Wednesday night at Bulldog Gymnasium.

The Lady Bulldogs went on a 15-0 third-quarter run to put the game out of reach.

Mabank was able to open the second half on a 6-2 run, highlighted by a Carson Marsh offensive board and putback, getting the Lady Panthers to within five at 33-28.

Marsh, a freshman, led the Lady Panthers with 17 points — including four 3-pointers. Meagan Holyfield added 15 points and four rebounds. The two combined for 32 of the team’s 43 points.

Coach Ashleigh Weeaks’ Mabank squad was the fourth place team out of District 15-3A.

Brownsboro thumps Mineola, 89-60

The Brownsboro Bears capped off the regular season with an 89-60 win over the Mineola Yellowjackets Wednesday night in Mineola.

With the win, the Bears will be the No. 2-seed in the playoffs after Canton lost to Mabank in overtime on Wednesday night.

Brownsboro finished with a 7-3 district record behind the Athens Hornets — who won the district with a 10-0 record.

Brownsboro is scheduled to face Bullard in bi-district next week.

No. 10-TVCC beats Kilgore, 65-59

The No. 10-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals took over first place in the East Zone of Region XIV with a 65-59 win over No. 5 Kilgore College Rangers Wednesday night at Cardinal Gymnasium.

The Cardinals (23-3, 13-2 in conference play) trailed, 29-28, at the half.

TVCC was led in scoring by Josh Robinson with 16 points, Octavius Ellis with 15 points, Dedrick Basile with 14 points and Aldonis Foote 10 with 10 points.

Kilgore (21-3, 12-3 in conference) was led by Stefan Moody with a game-high 25 points.

In first meeting at Kilgore, Kilgore was a 74-70 winner.

TVCC has Saturday off and return to action at home Wednesday night against Panola at 7:30 p.m.

LaPoynor playoff game set for tonight

The LaPoynor Flyers girls basketball team is set to face the Slocum Lady Mustangs tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Frankston High School in the area round of the Class A, Division I, Region III playoffs.

The Flyers defeated Hubbard, 50-39, on Tuesday night to advance to the area round.

LaPoynor finished as the runner-up behind the Martins Mill Lady Mustangs.

Slocum was the district champions in District 20-A play this season.

The winner of this contest will face Kerens or Chilton in the regional quarterfinals next week.

ATBA continuing signups this weekend

Athens Teenage Baseball Association president Tony Sikes said they are taking applications every Saturday in February at Coleman Park with tryouts scheduled for March 1.

The fee is $85 with discounts for each additional family member.
