FORT WORTH —
Cody Ohl dominated a hot and breezy matinee performance at the 38th Windy Ryon Memorial Roping, taking home more than $10,000 for a day’s work.
The six-time Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion from Hico first earned a $5,000 check after winning the tie-down roping title against Timber Moore of Aubrey at the famous show in Fort Worth. About 30 minutes later, Ohl pocketed $5,847 after finishing second in the 40-man Invitational calf roping event behind six-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Justin Maass of Giddings.
For the second consecutive year, Ohl defeated Moore in the Ryon match-roping finals. Ohl edged Moore, 70.01 to 73.03, after each cowboy made six runs.
Ohl reached the finals after overpowering Shane Hanchey, 39.02 to 40.66, in a four-head first-round match. Moore advanced after defeating Clint Cooper, 47.66 to 53.31.
Ohl said he thrives on match roping competitions.
“I wish there was more of them where I could make a living by just doing them, which would cut down on my travel,” Ohl said. “In order to win a match, you have to give it 110 percent.”
Ohl competed during a Saturday afternoon tie-down roping performance on May 28. The three-day Ryon Roping began May 27 with a team roping show and concluded May 29 with steer roping competition.
In the open team roping, seven-time world champion Clay O’Brien Cooper, and David Key, a nine-time National Finals qualifier, teamed up to win the open division title, each earning $8,442. In steer roping, defending world champion Rocky Patterson of Pratt, Kan., clinched the open division roping title and earned $7,943.
NCHA cancels shows
The National Cutting Horse Association has canceled all shows through June 5 (the traditional AQHA/NCHA Weekend) to help prevent the spread of Equine Herpes Virus-1 among horses.
The NCHA had made plans to work with the American Quarter Horse Association to provide support for a designated show in each of the NCHA’s 25 geographic regions this weekend. With that in mind, the NCHA will review the possibility of rescheduling the AQHA/NCHA Weekend.
The NCHA has monitored the situation of reported cases of EHV-1 that were reportedly first clinically diagnosed in horses that attended the NCHA Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah (April 29 - May 8).
