7/10 Fishing Report

ATHENS — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of July 10:

ATHENS — Water level is 3.09 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Bobby Spearman at Lake Athens Marina says bass fishing has been good to 10 pounds on Carolina rigs, deep cranks and jigs worked along drop offs in 20-35 feet of water. Crappie are slow; best bite has been at night. Bream are excellent on crickets and worms.

CEDAR CREEK — Water level is 4.45 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says blue cat are excellent on cut shad in 9-30 feet of water on main lake structure. Crappie are hitting shiners and jigs in 13-17 feet around bridges and brush piles. The fish are suspended at 10-12 feet. Black bass are on boat docks and offshore structure, taking Carolina rigs, shaky heads, cranks and plastics.

White bass are good in 12-24 feet of water, hitting slabs and sassy shads.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — Water level is 7.32 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing says low water level is preventing big boats from accessing many ramps without four wheel drive. Crappie fishing has been good for anglers who can get out. Best bite coming in standing timber 14-20 feet deep on shiners and jigs. Catfish are good in standing timber 12-16 feet deep; baited holes are giving up the best results using punch bait.

Bass fishing has been slow due to limited traffic.

PALESTINE — Water level is 0.85 feet low and clear down south, stained up north. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says bass to six pounds are taking frogs, buzz baits and top waters worked around lily pads at the north end of the lake. Farther south, cranks and jigs are working on points, around channel breaks and around docks. A few fish hitting topwaters early in the day.

Crappie are fair at the Highway 155 crossing and around brush piles in 18-20 feet. Catfish are excellent in 15 feet of water using night crawlers and punch bait. White bass are schooling early on main lake points down south, then moving to drops in 17 feet.

NACOGDOCHES — Water level about 1.77 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s, low 90s.

Bass fishing has been fair on wacky worms fished along channel breaks flanked by hydrilla, mostly small fish. A few good quality fish coming on jigs and heavy Texas rig creature baits flipped around deeper grass. Deep cranks producing some solid fish when strolled over deep channel breaks.

Crappie are fair on minnows soaked around deep brush.

FORK — Water level is 4.98 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Tony Parker at the Minnow Bucket says bass fishing has been good. Some topwater fishing early and late. Midday bite best in 10-12 feet on drop shots and shaky heads and in 20-25 feet on main points and humps using Strike King 10XD cranks. Lots of slot fish reported.

Crappie are good on brush piles in 20-25 feet of water. Bridge fishing is slow. Catfish are fair, mostly small fish reported along creek channels in 20 feet of water.

SAM RAYBURN — Water level is 3.11 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Bass fishermen are reporting spotty results around shallow grass. A 30-pound sack won the Anglers Quest event over the weekend. A few fish hitting topwater baits at first light. Ann Wilson at Ann's Tackle said anglers are using Strike Pro Hunch Backs, Texas rig red bug worms and wacky worms over grass in 6-12 feet of water.

Crappie fishing has been good on live shiners and jigs fished in 20-30 feet of water. Fishing has been on and off, Wilson said.

PINKSTON — Water level is about a foot low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s, low 90s.

Fishing guide Alan Spruiell says bass fishing has been fair to four pounds on Texas rig plastics fished along outside grass lines near drops in 14-16 feet. Some schooling activity on the main lake, hitting bone pattern Zara Spooks. The bite is best when the water is slick.

No report on crappie.

TOLEDO BEND — Water level is 2.43 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Tommy Martin says bass fishing has been tough. There have been some reports of a decent bite in shallow water using Texas rigs Senkos, swim jigs and crank baits along outside grass lines. Also some fish reported around brush piles using Texas rigs and crank baits.

Crappie are fair over deep brush piles using jigs and shiners. Catfish are good up north on trotlines tipped with live perch.

NACONICHE — Water level at full pool and fairly clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Bass are fair on Texas rigs, swim jigs and 'Traps fished at suspended depths around standing timber. Also some fish taking jigs and heavy Texas rigs flipped in edges of matted grass; the fish are very scattered.
