7/3 FISHING REPORT

Athens — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of July 3:

ATHENS — Water level 2.83 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Bobby Spearman at Lake Athens Marina says bass fishing has been excellent to six pounds on deep cranks, Texas rigs and Carolina rigs dragged along drop offs in deep water around Goat Island. Crappie are slow. Bream are excellent on crickets and small worms fished off docks and around lily pads.

CEDAR CREEK — Water level is 4.12 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says catfish are good to five pounds on main lake humps using cut shad in 15-25 feet. Crappie are hitting jigs around bridge pilings and brush piles in 15-25 feet.

White bass are on main lake humps in 14-22 feet, hitting slabs. Black bass are taking cranks and plastics around rocks and docks with shade. Carolina rigs and shaky heads also have been effective.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — Water level is 6.95 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing says catfishing has been good in standing timber 12-18 feet, mainly on punch bait and shad. White bass are schooling periodically early in the day on main lake points near the dam, then again late in the afternoon. Best catches coming on 'Traps.

Black bass are fair early in the morning using plastics, spinnerbaits and shallow cranks in 3-5 feet of water. Crappie are fair on shiners soaked around timber in 20-28 feet, suspended at seven feet early, down to 25 feet during midday.

PALESTINE — Water level is 0.58 feet and clear down south, stained up north. Water temp in upper 80s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says black bass are fair to two pounds on crankbaits worked in seven feet of water on points with brush. Up north anglers are reporting some decent bags around shallow grass in stained to muddy water.

Catfish are excellent on punch bait and night crawlers soaked on bottom in 15-17 feet around brush. Crappie are slow. White bass are taking spoons and Rat-L-Traps on main lake points from four feet out to the nearest drop off.

FORK — Water level is 4.75 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s and low 90s.

Fishing guide Gary Paris says bass fishing has been good to eight pounds on spoons, drop shots, Carolina rigs, football jigs and Texas rigs worked in 25-30 feet of water on points and around channel swings.
