Athens — MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Tigers got 20 points from Vanoid Dawson and had four others in double figures in a 75-50 win over the Mildred Eagles Friday night at The Palace.
With the win, Malakoff (21-5, 9-2) kept a share of first place in District 14-2A with the Kerens Bobcats, who defeated Blooming Grove Friday, 65-39.
The TIgers led by one, 22-21, heading into the second quarter. Cory Phelps scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter to help Malakoff move out to a 46-33 lead at half. Mildred was held to just six points in the third quarter.
Cornelius Richardson finished with 14 for Malakoff, and he was joined in double figures by Truman Dowell (13) and Bernard Hall (10).
GIRLS
Malakoff 44, Mildred 36
MALAKOFF — Courtney Dawson had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Kayla Mullins added 11 as the Lady Tigers handed the Lady Eagles their 10th District 14-2A defeat in 13 games.
Malakoff improved to 7-6 in district with the win.
"The girls played really well tonight," Malakoff Head Coach Emily Martinez said. "They played hard and they played as a team."
The Lady Tigers close out the season Tuesday at The Palace against Scurry-Rosser. It will be Senior Night.
In junior varsity action, Mildred beat Malakoff, 21-16.
