Athens punches postseason ticket

Lady Hornets fall, 70-64, to Palestine, but playoff berth clinched

Athens — PALESTINE — It may not have been how Athens Head Coach Austin Durrett drew it up, but it will work just fine.

The Lady Hornets (15-14, 4-5) were upset by the Palestine Lady Wildcats in District 20-3A action Friday night, 70-64. But because Palestine Westwood lost to Fairfield, the Lady Hornets qualified for the Class 3A playoffs in Durrett’s first season as head coach at Athens.

Alex Furr scored 44 points and Treka Franklin added 10. Demi Cumby (five points), Nicole Graham (four) and Christina Dennis (one) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Hornets.

“This team has grown a lot overall,” Durrett said. “Luckily it’s going to pay off. We took care of some wins early that enabled us to lose this one and still get in the playoffs.”

Athens closes out the regular season Tuesday night at home against the Brownsboro Bearettes.
