Softball players named all-state

Athens — Three Henderson County area softball players have been named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Academic All-State team.

Earning all-state recognition in Class 1A were Trinidad's Emily Airheart and Brooklyn Snider. In Class 3A, Mabank's Kassie Lander was honored.

Both Trinidad players earned All Henderson County honors for their performance on the field this season.

“Emily is a great first baseman. Her height was ability to stretch out really helped us on defense this year,” coach Tina Sawtelle said. “Her attitude is superb and she was a great leader for our team. She played in the clean-up spot offensively for the majority of the season and advanced runners in the majority of her at-bats.”

Airheart was named first team all-district and batted .386 on the season with a 98 percent fielding rating.

Snider batted .368 on the year with a perfect fielding percentage.

“Brook is a phenomenal catcher. She was named first team catcher as a freshman but Trinidad did not have a team her sophomore and junior year,” Sawtelle said. “Given our situation, Brook was forced to play pitcher most of the season. She is one of those players that a coach wishes they could clone.”

She played pitcher, catcher and shortstop for Trinidad this past season.

For Mabank, Lander was a pitcher for the Lady Panthers. She batted .361 on the season to lead the team.

The Texas Girls Coaches Association selects Academic All-State teams in softball in conferences 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A.

Athletes must be seniors, must have a GPA of 94 or above, and must be a team member in good standing.

Athletes are nominated by their member coaches. The head varsity coach must be a member in good standing of TGCA before Nov.1 of the school year.
