HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Heating up

Scrimmage season opens Friday night for four Henderson County area schools

Athens — After a week and a half of hitting each other, the intensity will change Friday night as teams begin scrimmages against other schools.

The first of two rounds of scrimmages begin Friday, when four Henderson County area teams — Athens, Cross Roads, Mabank and Malakoff — take the field. The area’s other four teams — Brownsboro, Kemp, Eustace, and Trinidad — scrimmage for the first time Saturday.

The Athens Hornets will scrimmage the Wills Point Tigers in a 7 p.m. varsity start at Wills Point (ninth-grade and junior varsity will begin on opposite ends of the field at 5 p.m.).

“We would like to see execution and fundamentals,” Athens head coach Paul Essary said. “We would like to see how physical our team will be playing and how well they play together.”

Essary said there’s heavy competition at a number of positions.

“We have some great competition with all of the positions,” Essary said. “Friday night could separate a few people.”

Following Friday night’s scrimmage, AHS will host Chapel Hill Thursday night.

NOTE: The Athens Hornets’ “Dinner for Dads” event will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the high school cafeteria. The dinner is expected to last about an hour.
