Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets open up the 2013 volleyball season tonight with a dual match against Eustace and Mildred at Athens High School.

Liz Ramsey, in her third season as Lady Hornets head coach, said the dual match will begin with Athens and Mildred at 4:30 p.m., with the final match of the night against state ranked Eustace.

The Lady Bulldog’s come into the contest as the No. 17-ranked team by the Texas Girls’ Coaches Association.

“I have seen Eustace and I don’t a lot about Mildred since we haven’t played them since I have been here,” Ramsey said. “With Eustace they are always scrappy defensively and they are always strong hitters.”

She said she plans on using the experience of senior Cari Aguilera and her experienced players coming back this season.

Athens has eight returning varsity players and four seniors on the team.

“We have things that we need to work on and we know what they are after playing Friday and Saturday in scrimmages,” Ramsey said. “We won two-of-three on Friday and split against Westwood on Saturday.”

Following a road match in Grand Saline on Friday, the Lady Hornets will open their home schedule August 20 against Grand Saline.

The ninth-grade action is slated to begin at 5 p.m., with junior varsity and varsity to follow. The varsity match should begin around 6:30 p.m.
