Search begins for new Brownsboro AD

90 applications submitted to replace Ty Thomison

BROWNSBORO — Brownsboro ISD is continuing their search for a new athletic director and head football coach following the resignation of former coach Ty Thomison.

Thomison put in his resignation with the school on Feb. 5 and cited personal reasons for his departure.

“We posted the position on Wednesday the 6th and we have been looking at applications,” BISD Superintendent Dr. Chris Moran said. “Today (Thursday) we have up to 90 applications with a committee of  Brownsboro ISD employees to review.

Thomison was placed on administrative leave January 22 by the school as George Losack was named interim athletic director in Thomison’s place.

Moran said in a previous edition of the Athens Review that district officials are “considering all options for leadership of the athletic program and will make the appropriate decisions at the appropriate time.

Moran said the school is hoping to have a new athletic direcor and head football coach in place in the next three-to-four weeks.

“The last week of February is our target date to start conducting interviews,” Moran said. “We would like to put a  clear finalist to the board on March 4.”

Moran said school officials are looking for a candidate that will have a close relationship with the student athletes.

“The first thing is like any parent we want our coaches to treat the kids like their own,” Moran said. “I think coach Thomison did a great job with that because he had a great relationship with the students.”

Thomison is a BHS graduate who was an assistant football coach in the district for 15 years.

He also served as head baseball coach before becoming head coach of the Bears when John Settle left for Sunnyvale in 2011.

Thomison’s team was 1-9 in his first year as head coach, but improved to 5-5 in 2012 and came within a win of making the playoffs.

“We are thankful that coach Thomison implemented so many good things into the program while he was here,” Moran said. “We are excited to hire a head coach and athletic director that will continue to do the things to help build the program forward.”

According to the posting on the Region VII Jobs Database, Brownsboro ISD is seeking a Head Football Coach/Athletic Director who demonstrates leadership, high character and the ability to develop a winning football program and overall athletic program for both girls and boys, grades 7-12.

Qualifications for the position include a bachelors degree and current teaching certificate while a master’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.

Other qualifications include previous head coaching experience, five years of teaching and coaching experience, knowledge of state and UIL policies governing athletics and the ability to manage budget, personnel and coordinate district functions.

Moran said he hopes their candidate will motivate the students to take part in extracurricular activities and build on the leadership that Thomison gave to the current student athletes.

"Athletics and fine arts are real critical to a well rounded student," Moran said. "We want our kids to participate and Ty has done a lot of good things for Brownsboro."
