The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up their regular season with a hard-fought 50-44 win on Senior Night at AHS Gymnasium.
With the win, first year coach Dee Evans’ Lady Hornets snapped a seven game losing streak to finish the season at 9-21 and 2-8 in District 15-3A play.
With the loss, the Brownsboro Bearettes were eliminated from the playoffs and finished the season at 16-6 and 4-6 in District play.
AHS senior Demi Cumby had another monster game offensively in her final game at Athens.
She scored a game-high 31 points with 12 of those points coming in the first half of play.
Both teams played a very tight first half as they were deadlocked at 7-7 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, AHS jumped to their biggest lead of the quarter at, 17-13, on an old-fashioned three point play with 1:58 remaining.
Brownsboro found a way to battle back in the second half and tied the game at 24-24 on a pair of free throws by Madison Alexander with 4:11 remaining.
AHS would continue to fight in the final quarter as Hadley Cain put them up by five at, 42-37 on a jumper and free throw with 4:39 remaining in the game.
The Lady Hornets relied on Cumby to seal the win as she nailed five free throws in the final 1:05 for the finale.
Brownsboro was led by Madison Montgomery with 10 points in the game.
BOYS
Athens 62, Brownsboro 58
The Athens Hornets split the season series with the Brownsboro Bears in another hotly contested 62-58 win Tuesday night at AHS Gymnasium.
AHS (17-15, 4-4) remains in the race for a postseason berth with the win with two games remaining in the regular season.
The Hornets jumped out to a 14-8 lead late in the opening quarter with an aggressive defense that held Brownsboro to 14 points in the first quarter.
Junior guard Anthony Sanders gave the Brownsboro defense problems in the first half as he scored 15 of his game-high 31 points in the opening half.
Following a free-throw by Sanders with 2:32 remaining in the opening quarter that gave AHS a 15-10 lead, Brownsboro held them scoreless the remainder of the quarter.
BHS forward Quentin McKenzie was able to cut into the lead with a putback and then an assist to teammate Tamrick Pace for the 15-14 deficit after one period.
BHS found a way to cut the deficit to one point again late in the third quarter as Jared Bragdon found Blake Ralson for the three-pointer with 2:10 remaining in the quarter.
In the found, BHS (21-8, 6-2) took their first lead of the game on a jumper by Davonte Givens with 5:25 remaining.
Athens then took control of the game outscoring Brownsboro, 17-10 to seal the win.
Givens gave Brownsboro its final lead of the game with 1:50 remaining on a three-pointer off an assist from Ralson for a 57-55 lead.
AHS then sealed the win as Courtland Lyons raced past the Brownsboro defense and scored a fast-break layup for the 62-58 finale.
Lyons finished with 18 points for the Hornets, while teammates Antwon Chilton added five points.
Brownsboro was led in scoring by Givens with 21 points with Ralson added 18 in the loss.
AHS continues their three game homestand Friday night against the Canton Eagles, while Brownsboro travels to Mineola on Friday night.
Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m.
The Hornets will wrap up the regular season next Tuesday night with Senior Night festivities against the Van Vandals.
