Athens —
The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals broke a three-game losing skid Saturday afternoon during an 80-59 win over the Panola Ponies.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in Region XIV conference play.
“We have not played very well at home recently for whatever reason,” TVCC first-year coach Kris Baumann said. “I thought we played better today and got off to a good start.”
The fast start for the Cardinals saw them jump out to a 23-10 lead midway through the opening half.
During that run, freshman guard Kyree Wooten gave TVCC a 20-10 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play with 11:14 remaining in the opening half.
“I was happy that we won and thought that we did some things well,” Baumann said. “There are still some things that we need to work on but I was happy to be able to win at home.”
The Cardinals used an aggressive defense throughout the game to force the Ponies into multiple turnover situations.
TVCC freshman Octavius Ellis led the way for the Cardinals with 22 points and nine blocks.
Coach Baumann said he was impressed with the play of Ellis.
“I thought he slowed it down today,” Baumann said. “I thought he did a good job and was patient and when he gets his focus towards basketball he is a pretty good player.”
Teammates Tim Allen and Carl Porter helped spur the win with 16 and 14 points respectively.
Freshman Jhaustin Thomas scored all 10 of his points in the second half of play.
The Cardinals are back on the road Wednesday night for a matchup against the Paris Dragons.
Tipoff for that game is set for 7 p.m.
“We are trying to win one in a row,” Baumann said. “We are going to go to Paris and see if we can give them a good game. They are physical and tough and we are going to have to have a great effort to get a win up there.”
