Hornets looking for second tournament title of season

Athens — Athens coach Jonathan Ryal’s soccer team has mometum on their side heading into their second tournament of the year this weekend.

Following a 2-0-1 finish in the Palestine tournament, the Hornets head to Marshall to take part in the Marshall Winter Cup.

They will open the tournament Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against District 31-4A rival Tyler Chapel Hill.

AHS returns on Friday for games against Carthage at 11:45 a.m. before returning to the pitch for a 7 p.m. contest against Marshall.

In their championship win over Kaufman last Saturday, AHS tied the game at 1-1 with five minutes remaining on a goal by Alfredo Vasquez.

The game was forced into penalty kicks as Enrique Rodriguez, Juan Mota, Cesar Ortega and in sudden death Osiel Nieto scored the game winner.

Below is the schedule for the Marshall Winter Cup.

Thursday

10 a.m. — Hallsville vs. Center

11:45 a.m. — Texas High vs. Tatum

1:30 p.m. — Carthage vs. Marshall

3:30 p.m. — Athens vs. Chapel Hill

5:15 p.m. — Tatum vs. Hallsville

7 p.m. — Center vs. Texas High

Friday

10 a.m. — Marshall vs. Chapel Hill

11:45 a.m. — Carthage vs. Athens

1:30 p.m. — Center vs. Tatum

3:30 p.m. — Texas High vs. Hallsville

5:15 p.m. — Chapel Hill vs. Carthage

7 p.m. — Athens vs. Marshall
