The No. 3-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals showed they are a force to be reckoned with the remainder of the Region XIV conference season.
First-year coach Elena Lovato’s team improved to 17-1 on the season with a 78-42 win over the Kilgore Lady Rangers at Cardinal Gym.
Sophomore guard Shannon Smith poured in a team-high 15 points, while teammate Savannah Carter added 15 points.
Krystle Henderson and Shlonte’ Allen each scored 13 points for the Lady Cards.
TVCC jumped out to a 20-5 lead the first nine minutes of the game before Kilgore put together a run to cut the lead down to seven at, 26-19, on a jumper by Tanisha Winston with 6:40 remaining in the half.
TVCC was able to take a 40-23 lead into the locker-room and then outscored the Lady Rangers 38-19 in the second half to pull out the victory.
TVCC will return to the court Saturday when they travel to Tyler to face off against the Lady Apaches. Tip-off for the game is set for 2:30 p.m.
BOYS
Kilgore 73, TVCC 62
TVCC dug themselves into a hole early in their game against Kilgore and could not find a way to bounce back as they fell to 13-6 on the year.
The Cardinals were able to get themselves to within three at 33-30 on a layup by Jarion Henry with 17:31 remaining.
Kilgore quickly got the lead back to double figures leading by as many as 16 points late in the second half.
TVCC was led by Carl Porter with 14 points and Octavius Ellis with 12 points.
The Cardinals look to get back in the win column with a trip Saturday in Tyler against the Tyler Apaches.
Tip-off got the game is set for 4:30 p.m.
