Hornets dominate, AHS girls fall to 1-3 in district

ATHENS — Athens junior guard Anthony Sanders erupted for a game-high 26 points in the second half of their 91-63 win over the Mineola Yellowjackets Tuesday night at AHS Gymnasium.

With the win, first year coach Gerald Anthony’s Hornets are now 14-12 on the year and 1-1 in District 15-3A play.

The Athens Hornets went on an offensive outburst in the second half after leading 28-24 at the half by outscoring Mineola 63-39 in the second half.

AHS was led in the first half by guard Courtland Lyons who sliced his way through the Mineola defense scoring 13 of his 15 points.

In the third quarter, AHS held Mineola scoreless for nearly three minutes to extend a 43-33 lead into a 56-33 lead with 2:31 remaining in the quarter.

Sanders capped off that scoring run with a fast-break layup.

Athens had all 12 players score in the game as Antwon Chilton scored 15 points, while Ryan Jefferson scored 11 points.


Mineola 54, Athens 50

The Lady Hornets held their own against No. 23-ranked Mineola during their district loss on Tuesday.

Both teams combined for a total of 62 free throw attempts in the game.

The Lady Hornets (8-16, 1-3) played to a first half deadlock at 21-21 against the MHS as senior guard Demi Cumby scored nine of her game-high 34 points in the first half.

In the opening minutes of the game, Athens was able to jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a layup by Josee McNeece and the clutch shooting of Cumby.

In the third quarter, the Lady Jackets held their biggest lead of the game at, 36-30, on a jumper by Ali Galaz with one minute remaining.

McNeece and Cari Aguilera added five points each for the Lady Hornets.

Athens travels to Brownsboro Friday night. Tip-off is set for 6:15 p.m.
