HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: AHS earns a split over district rival Mineola

Lady Hornets lose 64-40, while Hornets dominate for a 91-63 win over Yellowjackets

ATHENS — The Athens Hornets (14-12, 1-1) held a 28-24 lead at the intermission and exploded for a 35 point third quarter to put the game out of reach Tuesday night at AHS Gymnasium.

Junior Anthony Sanders had a quiet first half of play and scored a game-high 26 points in the second half of play for the Hornets.

Girls

Mineola 64, Lady Hornets 60

The Athens Lady Hornets and the Mineola Lady Jackets shot a combined 62 free throws Tuesday night during their District 15-3A contest at AHS Gymnasium.

When all was said and done, Mineola improved to 4-0 in district play with a, 64-60, win over the Lady Hornets.

Both teams were tied at 21-21 at the half, but Mineola outscored AHS 34-29 in the second half.

Senior Demi Cumby led the way for the Lady Hornets (8-15, 1-3) with a game-high 34 points. Teammate Josee McNeece and Cari Aguilera had five points each.
