JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Trinity Valley falls to Cougars, 74-64

Wrap up South zone schedule at 4-3 in conference

ATHENS — A 15-2 hole in the first five and a half minutes of Saturday afternoon’s game between Trinity Valley Community College and Coastal Bend Community College found the hometown Cardinals battling from behind the entire game.

The Coastal Bend Cougars took advantage and moved to 11-3 on the season and 5-2 in Region XIV Conference action with a 74-64 win.

This was the final game for both teams in the battle of North zone vs. South zone teams as First year head coach Kris Baumann’s Cardinals finished off the first half of play at 4-3 in conference play. They dropped to 13-5 on the season with the loss.

The Cardinals trailed throughout the first 17 minutes of the contest and held their first of three leads of the game at, 26-25, on a jumper by freshman Jarion Henry. Henry finished the game with a team-high 15 points.

Coastal Bend then went on a 12-4 run to put them back in the driver’s seat at, 37-30, as sophomore Brandon Golden scored six points during the run.

TVCC held leads of 28-27 and 30-29 in the first two minutes for their only other leads of the second half.

Karon Phillips and Octavius Ellis scored 12 points each, while Dominique Elliott added eight points for the Cardinals.

Golden had 19 points for the Cougars to lead all scorers.

The Cardinals return to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday at home against the Kilgore Rangers.
