Athens’ evens their district record with a 63-56 win over Lady Vandals

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets evened their district record Tuesday night with a 63-56 win over the visiting Van Lady Vandals.

With the win, first-year coach Dee Evans team is now 8-14 on the season and 1-1 in District 15-3A play.

AHS came out aggressive in the opening 16 minutes of the game and battled back from a 15-10 deficit midway through the opening quarter to take a 21-19 lead on back-to-back three pointers by senior guard Demi Cumby.

Van (0-2 in district) was able to put together a run and take a 28-23 lead on a basket by sophomore post Bri Thompson.

The Lady Hornets battled back and tied the game at 31-31 on another jumper by Cumby with 1:33 remaining in the quarter.

Both teams went into the locker room tied at 35-35 as Cumby scored 14 of her team-high 21 points in the first half.

The third quarter was almot a stalemate between the two teams as Athens outscored the Lady Vandals, 12-11.

During the period, the Lady Vandals defense held AHS scoreless for nearly three minutes until Josee McNeece scored on a fast-break layup for a 46-39 deficit.

Athens held a one-point lead at 47-46 heading into the final quarter and Athens stepped up on defense in the final quarter of play outscoring Van, 15-10.

AHS relied heavily on their free-throw shooting eight free throws in the final quarter.

The Lady Hornets defense was able to force Van into multiple turnovers in the final quarter, and held them scoreless for over four minutes of action.

Athens had five of their scorers in double figures as Cari Aguilera scored 11 points.

McNeece added 12 points for the Lady Hornets while Bryla Barker added 10 points.

AHS will look to continue their win streak Friday as they travel to Mabank to take on the Lady Panthers. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

Boys

Lindale 59, AHS 55

The Athens Hornets fell to 13-11 on the year with a hard-fought loss to the Lindale Eagles in the non-district finale at AHS Gymnasium.

Both teams had a solid shooting night in the first half as Lindale held a 30-29 lead at intermission.

Lindale jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Chris Jefferson opened up the scoring for the Hornets with a layup at the 5:45 mark of the opening quarter.

Athens guard Kynden Crist gave the Hornets a 26-23 lead midway through the second quarter on an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:25 remaining in the first half.

Crist finished the game with 12 points for the Hornets.

In the second half, Athens junior Anthony Sanders went to work scoring 11 of his team-high 22 points.

He opened up the scoring in the second half with a steal and fast-break layup to give Athens a 31-30 lead.

Lindale recorded their biggest lead of the game midway through the third quarter at 48-39 as Lindale forced Athens into turnovers.

In the fourth quarter, Athens tried to cut into the Lindale lead with their three-point shooting but was only able to cut the lead down to one at 51-50 with five minutes remaining in the game.

Lindale was led in scoring by Terry with a game-high 24 points.

Athens looks to get back on the winning track Friday night as they open District 15-3A play on the road at Mabank.

This will be the first game the Hornets have played against former coach Tracy Carter.

Carter led the Hornets to consecutive trips to the regional tournament before taking over the coaching vacancy.

Tipoff for the game at Panther Gymnasium is scheduled for 8 p.m.
