Tigers shake off 1st district loss with 84-38 win over Rice

MALAKOFF — In losing their first 14-2A game of the season last week in blowout fashion to Edgewood, Malakoff Head Coach DeArtis Nickerson was left unhappy with his Tigers’ effort.

The Tigers, however, bounced back with plenty of effort in an 84-38 blowout win over the Rice Bulldogs (5-19, 0-8) in 14-2A) Tuesday night at The Palace.

Malakoff (19-5, 7-1) got 22 points from Vanoid Dawson and 16 points and 10 steals from Terry Shamlin on a night when the Tigers forced 37 Rice turnovers.

Cory Phelps had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, and Bernard Hall had six steals and four rebounds to go with his five points.

The Tigers did all the heavy lifting they would need in the first quarter, when they jumped out to a 20-2 lead after the first eight minutes.

Truman Dowell was also in double figures for the Tigers with 11 points.

Hunter Thedford finished with a team-high seven for Rice, and Fidel Lusuano and Thomas Phillips had five each.

With wins by Malakoff, Edgewood and Kerens Tuesday, the three teams head into Friday in a three-way tie for the District 14-2A lead.
