The Athens 12 and under All-Stars wrapped up their District 6 Dixie Youth tournament with an 11-1 run-rule win over Teague Tuesday night in the finale at Coleman Park.
The Athens All-Stars qualified for their state tournament in Conroe July 13-19 on Monday night.
Tuesday night’s game wrapped up an undefeated district tournament for coach David Cornelius, Dusty Godwin and Chris Kale All-Star team.
They will be having three different fundraisers during the next week with two of them this Saturday at Groom and Son’s and Applebee’s.
The fundraiser at Groom and Son’s will start at 9:30 a.m. and Applebee’s at 11:30 a.m.
They will then return for another fundraiser next Thursday and Friday from 10-4 p.m. at Walmart.
Teague jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as they were able to score on a throwing error by first baseman Brandon Stallings.
In the bottom half of the inning, Chris Garcia smacked an inside the park home run to tie the game up at 1-1.
Athens came back in the bottom of the second inning with another strong inning as Stallings led off the inning with a double.
Stallings then stole third and scored on an RBI groundout by Zackery Cornelius for the 2-1 lead.
The Athens All-Stars then put the game out of reach in the third inning as they sent 13 batters to the plate scoring eight runs off Teague pitching.
Grant Echols led off the inning reaching base on a throwing error by the second baseman.
He was able to score on an error during Austin McNeece’s at bat for the 3-0 lead.
Following a balk that advanced McNeece to third, Karson Godwin was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a stolen base.
Connor Woodard then drove in McNeece with an RBI single, followed by a passed ball that plated Godwin for the 5-1 lead.
Athens would continue to put on the pressure as Chris Garcia got on base with a walk, followed by an RBI ground out from Kobe Kale that scored Woodard.
Stallings then smacked an RBI single that scored Luis Valdez and later scored on a passed ball for a 9-1 lead.
Athens wrapped up their scoring in the third inning as Kole Graham scored on a passed ball for the 10-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Godwin reached base on a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Woodard.
Godwin then scored the final run of the game on a passed ball to force the run-rule by the umpires at 11-1.
Athens was led at the plate by Brandon Stallings — who went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Chris Garcia went 1-for-1 with an inside the park home run and two runs scored.
Graham allowed only one run on two hits for the Athens All-Stars with six strikeouts and one walk in the ball game.
In total, the Athens little league teams had five teams advance to state tournaments.
The machine pitch, coach pitch, 9 and under, 12 and under and 14 and under teams will be playing in state tournaments over the next two weeks.
