UIL STATE TRACK: Soaring high

Walker competing in Class 3A high jump

BROWNSBORO — On to the state meet.

Brownsboro freshman Amber Walker has accomplished more than most athletes could dream of in high school track.

Walker will be competing in the Class 3A girls high jump at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

“I am nervous and excited and I am blessed to have the opportunity to make it as a freshman,” Walker said.

Walker will be in the state meet with a height of 5 feet, 5 inches — which she hit at the regional meet.

She is only one inch away from a podium finish as three girls have cleared 5 feet, 6 inches.

The top height has come from Morgan McKee from Greenwood High School in Midland.

She has cleared 5 feet, 9 inches this year.

Walker said she has actually cleared 5 feet, 6 inches this year and has some areas she needs to work on before Friday’s meet.

“I need to work on consistency and speed before the meet,” Walker said. “I have hit 5 foot, 6 inches this year and it helps a lot to know that I can do it,” Walker said. “When I am in a competition that makes me jump higher and so that makes me know I can do it.”

She said coaches Fred Griffin, Lauren Spradlin, Rita Gray and Felicia Mosley are behind her 100-percent.

She said she has one goal in mind when she finishes her event at the state meet.

“I would like to know that I did my best and that I can hopefully come out of the meet with a win.”

Walker is the only Class 3A athlete from the county who is competing.
