REGION II-3A BI-DISTRICT SOFTBALL: A crusher in Grand Saline

Bullard takes Game 1 over Athens, 3-1

GRAND SALINE — The Athens Lady Hornets will need to be the comeback kids on Saturday following a tough loss on Friday night to the Bullard Lady Panthers.

Bullard (21-4) jumped out to a 1-0 series lead with a 3-1 win over the Athens Lady Hornets at Grand Saline.

The best-of-three Class 3A, Region II series resumes with Game 2 at noon at Grand Saline. Should the Lady Hornets win and extend the series, a decisive Game 3 will be played at the same site 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.

Athens (12-11-1) had chances throughout the contest, but could not figure out Bullard senior ace Kristi “Coco” Springer.

Springer picked up the complete game win — striking out 13 Lady Hornets. She allowed one earned run, two hits and four walks.

Athens was able to score its only run of the game in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice as Haley Durden came in to score.

Athens freshman Kristin House picked up the loss with a complete game outing. She allowed three runs — one earned — on seven hits to go with three strikeouts and three walks.

Athens had a chance to jump out early on the Lady Panthers as Durden reached on a walk. She was able to advance to third on an error by the third baseman.

House then put runners on the corners as she was awarded first due to catcher interference with no outs.

Springer was then able to get Josee McNeece out on a strikeout, McKenzie Fowler popped up to second and Krystal Davis went down on strikes to leave the runners stranded.

The Lady Panthers opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning as Sarah Wakefield scored on a wild pitch.

Bullard scored its second run in the top of the third as courtesy runner Chelsea Robinson scored on an error by the left fielder.

The Lady Panthers would score their final run of the game as Hana Woyt scored on an error by the third baseman for the 3-0 lead.

Durden finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Davis went 1-for-3 for the Lady Hornets only hits of the game.

The winner of the series will advance to the area round next week and will play either Kaufman or Paris North Lamar.
