CANTON — The Canton Eagles secured a playoff berth Friday night at the expense of the Brownsboro Bears, 35-13.
Canton (8-1) will now set it sights on taking on Van in the District 15-3A championship game next week. Both teams are unbeaten at 4-0.
Coach Ty Thomison's Bears also have a big game on the horizon next week. Brownsboro (5-4) entertains Athens in a game that will decide the district's third-place playoff representative.
Canton carried a 21-7 lead into the fourth quarter, fueled by Chandler Elland. Elland tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to his brother, Connor Elland, and trotted into the end zone from six yards out – all sandwiched around a 21-yard scoring strike from Kade Warren to Colton Williams.
Reece Sumner gave Canton the initial lead on a one-yard run. Brownsboro matched the touchdown before the opening quarter ended on a two-yard run by Johntae Walker.
Brownsboro was delivered a big blow early in the game when quarterback Shelby Rogers left the game with an injury and did not return. The extent of his injury and availablity for the showdown with Athens is unknown.
Sumner scored on a 50-yard run with 1:14 left in the game to close the scoring.
