JUNIOR COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: There’s always tomorrow

TVCC falls to top-ranked San Jac, plays elimination game Friday

BAYTOWN — No. 1-ranked San Jacinto lived up to its billing Friday afternoon in the final game of the opening round of the Region XIV Volleyball Tournament at Lee College.

Using a decisive advantage at the net, the Lady Ravens took care of the upset-minded Lady Cardinals in 3-0 fashion — 25-18, 25-21, 25-13.

The loss dropped Coach Tosha Spain’s TVCC squad, making its first-ever appearance in the tournament, to 18-11 on the year and into the elimination bracket to face Panola at noon Friday. Panola dropped a 3-1 decision to Laredo in its opener.

San Jacinto (29-1) will next face Laredo at 4 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Ravens simply had too much at the net for the Lady Cardinals, though TVCC never backed down. Oni Lattin, Marie-Pierre Bakima, Marlina Pleydle and Shelbee Pier seemingly had an answer for everything the Lady Cardinals could throw at them, whether it be power or finesse.

Jazmine Hicks went toe-to-toe with San Jacinto at the net, but depth made the difference in the end for the Lady Ravens. Hicks had three kills and a dink in Game 1, which saw the score tied briefly just once at 2-2. TVCC never led.

San Jacinto reeled off six straight points after the Lady Cardinals pulled with two, 17-15.

In Game 2, the Lady Cardinals managed a 19-19 tie before San Jacinto closed them out with a 6-2 run.

Behind Hicks, the Lady Cardinals forged a 5-5 tie in Game 3 before the Lady Ravens hit stride and opened up a 17-7 lead. It was never close after that.
