AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: No. 1-Lady Cards basketball beats McLennan, 83-69

WACO — The No. 1-ranked team in the nation, the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals improved to 5-0 on the season with a 83-69 win over McLennan College Monday night.

This is the second time this season that TVCC has defeated McLennan. The Lady Cardinals won, 70-54, on Nov. 12 at Cardinal Gym.

Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals on Monday were Adut Bulgak with 17 points and 13 rebounds, Jazmine Spears with 13 points, Shlonte' Allen with 10 points and Leashja Grant with 10 points.

TVCC (5-0) will return to the court in the opening round of the Women’s NIT Tournament in Midland. TVCC will face the Central Arizona Vaqueras in a rematch of last year’s national title game Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.

TVCC won the title game, 83-71, in March of this year.

TVCC will continue the tournament through Saturday.

AMS teams finish 3-1 in season opener

The Athens eighth grade A team won, 68-13, over the Mabank Panthers on Monday.

Leading scorers were Javiry Bowman with 18 points, Miles Koehler with 12, Chris Taylor had 11 and Xavious Fulton had 10.

In B team action, Athens won 30-21.

Victor Dawson was the leading scorer for Athens.

In seventh grade action, the Athens A team lost to Mabank, 30-28.

Athens was led in scoring by Quintavian Gardner with eight points, Andrew McBride with six points and Rhejhi Sherfield with four points. Gardner was the top rebounder.

In B team action, Athens won 19-14.

Leading in scoring was Ja'Quaylon Bowman with eight points, Na'keldrick Cumby and John Benge had four points each and Marquis Henderson finished with three.
