HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Slim victory

Bearettes remain undefeated in District 15-3A with 41-38 win over Mabank

MABANK — The Brownsboro Bearettes improved to 20-6 overall and 6-0 in District 15-3A play with a 41-38 win over the Mabank Lady Panthers Tuesday night.

In the varsity game, BHS held a 23-22 lead at the half and trailed 30-29 heading into the final quarter.

Brownsboro  senior Sidney Hightower led the team in scoring with 14 points, while Tamaria Manning added 12 points.

Shelbie Bagby and Bri Warren scored seven points each.

For Mabank, they were led in scoring by Madison Holyfield with 11 points and Meagan Holyfield with nine points.

The Brownsboro junior varsity won 48-19, while the freshman picked up a 42-14 victory.

Brownsboro will host Mineola on Friday night.

Athens loses to Canton, 76-31

The Athens Lady Hornets could not contain No. 13-ranked Canton Tuesday night at AHS gymnasium as Canton prevailed 76-31 in a District 15-3A contest.

Canton held a 28-4 lead after the first quarter and a 45-16 lead at the break.

Athens was led in scoring by Cari Aguilera with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, while Bryla Barker with eight points and 10 rebounds.

In junior varsity action, Athens lost 68-20 as Hailey Adair led the way with seven points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Aaliyah Moore had four points for Athens.

The Lady Hornets will host Van on Friday night with tip off set for 6:15 p.m.

Malakoff boys beat Eustace, 58-54

EUSTACE — The Malakoff Tigers’ gave head coach Deartis Nickerson win No. 490 of his coaching career with a 58-54 win over Eustace Tuesday night.

Damontes Dowell led the way for Malakoff with 15 points, while Marcus Dowell added 13 points in the win.

For Eustace, Steven Stine scored a game-high 16 points, while Chad Tindel added 13 points.

Malakoff travels to Palmer Friday night, while Eustace will be on the road at Kemp.

In girls action, Malakoff defeated Eustace 49-29 on Tuesday.
