HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Two Tigers named to Padilla Poll coaches all-state second team

MALAKOFF — The post season awards continue to come in for Malakoff seniors Damontes Dowell and Israel Chavez.

The two players were recently named to the Padilla Poll coaches all-state second team ballot for the 2013 football season.

Chavez finished out his high school career with a District 7-2A Co-Defensive Most Valuable Player award.

He is also a nominee on the Texas Sports Writers Class 2A All-State football team.

Chavez was named as a second team defensive lineman on the Athens Daily Review All Henderson County football team.

Chavez recorded 73 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 4 quarterback pressures, two sacks and one fumble recovery.

The Tigers were led offensively by senior Damontes Dowell — a 1,814 yard rusher with 31 touchdowns.

Dowell was selected as the Athens Daily Review All Henderson County Most Valuable Player for the football season.

He was also named the District 7-2A Most Valuable Player for the football season.

Dowell is also a nominee on the Texas Sports Writers Class 2A All-State football team.

Dowell also participated in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Orlando, Fla. earlier this year.

The Tigers finished the year with an 11-2 record and broke four school records with most points scored (635), most points scored in a game (73 versus Grand Saline), most games played (13) and most playoff wins in a season with two.

MHS lost in the regional round to New Boston, 34-27, earlier this season.

The trip was the Tigers fifth straight playoff appearance. During that time, the Tigers have an overall  record of 45-14.
