HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: AHS continues hot start with an 80-57 win over Canton

Athens — The No. 12-ranked Athens Hornets improved to 21-1 on the year with a 80-57 win over the Canton Eagles Tuesday night at AHS gymnasium.

Athens (4-0 in district) will look to sweep the first round of District 15-3A play with a home game on Friday against the Van Vandals. The varsity game is scheduled to tip off around 7:30 p.m.

“It is getting tougher,” AHS Gerald Anthony said. “If we treat them lightly then they are going to play tough. We have to play even harder and I hope tonight was a wake up call to the guys that we need to play well on Friday.”

Anthony said at the half the game was tight and in the second half, the players stepped up to the challenge.

“It took us a while to figure out how to defend them tonight and in the second half we buckled down,” Anthony said.

Senior guard Anthony Sanders led the way with 32 points, while senior Ryan Jefferson added 17 points and Courtland Lyons chipped in 13 points in the win.
