HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING: Athens lifter Rodriguez finishes first at Van meet

Athens — The 2014 power lifting season began for many lifter across Henderson County as four teams opened in the Van meet on Saturday.

In the boys division, the Athens Hornets finished in sixth place among 16 teams as Jose Rodriguez placed first in the 123 pound weight class. Rodriguez had lifts of 385 pounds in the squat, 265 pounds in the bench press and 370 pounds in the dead lift.

In the super heavy weight class, John Arellano finished in second place with a 560 pound squat, a 315 pound bench press and a 515 pound dead lift.

Josh West competed in the super heavy weight class with totals of 395 pounds in the squat, 245 pounds in the bench press and 360 pounds in the dead lift.

In the 148 pound weight class, Malik Hall finished 23rd with a total weight of 620 pounds, while Bryce Mayo was 30th in the 181 pound class with a total lift of 730 pounds.

Noah Buch was 19th in the 198 pound class with a total lift of 905 pounds.

In the 220 pound division, Logan Fuller finished in 15th place with a lift of 1,005 pounds, while in the 275 pound division, Chad Walker, JC Overton and Isiah Hale finished in 12th, 17th and 18th place respectively.

In the girls division, Athens finished in fifth place as a team led by a third place finish from Kaelin Henry in the 97-pound weight class with a lift of 385 pounds. She lifted 150 pounds in the squat, 65 pounds in the bench press and 170 pounds in the dead lift.

Nikki Lira was fifth in the 97-pound weight class for Athens.

In the 105 pound class, Marisol Arciaga finished fifth, Stephanie Miranda was 15th in the 114 pound class and Wendi Pacheco was sixth in the 123 pound class.

Shannon Warren finished in 24th place in the 148 pound class, Bree Thompson was eighth in the 165 pound class, Kendra Rodgers and Anna Garcia were 10th and 11th in the 181 pound class and Ingrid Castaneda, Ashlyn Stewart and Angel Causey were sixth, seventh and eighth in the 198 pound class.

In the 220 pound class, Laura Rodriguez wrapped up the Athens lifters with an eighth place finish.

Thomas Acol was the leading lifter for Malakoff with a third place finish and a total lift of 1,225 pounds in the super heavy weight class.

Kemp’s Olice Rogers finished in second place in the 165 pound weight class with a lift of 1,160 pounds. He had a 450 pound squat and a 425 pound dead lift.

Ethan Hoops led the Eustace lifters in the 114 pound class with a 660 pound total.

In the girls division, Malakoff was led by Candice Denis and Deandra Dowell with third place finishes in the 165 pound and 181 pound weight classes. Denis had a total lift of 635 pounds, while Dowell had a total lift of 600 pounds.

Sunni Goodell led Eustace in the 220 pound category with a total lift of 840 pounds. Goodell had a 370 pound squat to her total weight.

For Kemp, Kayla Hale and Kalee Anderson won their division’s at the meet.

Hale won the 105 pound division with a total lift of 570 pounds, while Anderson lifted 590 pounds.
