AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Hornets thump Mineola, 73-23

MINEOLA — Athens senior Ryan Jefferson had another strong game for the Hornets with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals in their 73-23 win over Mineola Tuesday night.

Athens (19-1, 2-0) is ranked No. 17 in the state and will host Brownsboro Friday night in District 15-3A action. Tip off for the varsity game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Anthony Sanders scored 16 points for the Hornets in one half of play, while Kynden Crist added 11 points.

Athens drops game  to Mineola, 58-45

MINEOLA — Bryla Barker scored 20 points for the Athens Lady Hornets in their 58-45 District 15-3A loss on Tuesday night.

Cari Aguilera and Hadley Cain also scored in double figures for Athens with 15 and 10 points respectively.

AHS looks for its first district win Friday night against the Brownsboro Bearettes at AHS Gymnasium.

BHS sweeps Canton Tuesday night

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bears improved to 2-0 in District 15-3A play with a 53-41 win over Canton Tuesday night.

In girls action, the Bearettes won 48-46 in over time over No. 15-ranked Canton.

Bri Warren led the way with 17 points, Tamaria Manning had 11 points and Sidney Hightower added nine points.

BHS will travel to Athens Friday night for a District 15-3A contest.

Mabank loses close game to Van, 52-47

VAN — Madison Holyfield scored 18 points and teammate Bry Colwell added 11 points for the Mabank Lady Panthers in a District 15-3A loss to the Van Lady Vandals Tuesday night.

Mabank will return to the court Friday night hosting Mineola.

VAN — The Mabank Panthers dropped to 0-2 in District 15-3A play with a 42-40 over time loss to Van Tuesday night.

Dalton Burleson led the way for Mabank with 11 points.

Malakoff beats Scurry Rosser, 49-40

SCURRY — The Malakoff Tigers gave head coach Deartis Nickerson win No. 489 of his career with a 49-40 win over Scurry Rosser in District 13-2A play Tuesday night.

Deric Greenhaw led the way with 14 points, while Darriuhn Jackson had 10 points.

AHS Lady Hornets lose to Ferris, 3-0

FERRIS — The Athens Lady Hornets soccer team dropped to 2-2-1 on the season with a 3-0 loss at Ferris Tuesday night.

Coach Skip Stevens’ team will return to action today in the Lufkin Showcase. AHS will face Kilgore at 11:30 a.m.
