The Athens Review
The Brownsboro Bears jumped out to an early 16-3 lead at the half in their District 15-3A opener and rolled to a 36-11 win Friday night against the Mabank Panthers at Panther Stadium.
With the win, Brownsboro improved its record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district play. Mabank fell to 1-5 with the loss and 0-1 in district play.
Last season, the Panthers defeated Brownsboro in non-district play with a 17-14 homecoming win in which junior kicker Korey Roberts nailed a 23-yard field goal with no time remaining.
This time, the Bears found a way to score early and often as Demetrius Moore opened up the scoring by stepping in front of a Rance Thorne pass and racing 33-yards to paydirt for a 7-0 lead. Cesar Gutierrez nailed the PAT good with 7:30 remaining in the opening quarter.
Brownsboro added to its lead in the first quarter following a Mabank interception when the Bears' defense tackled Clay Gaddis in the end zone for a safety and a 9-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Bears put themselves in great field position and then marched 54 yards in four plays capped off by a 47-yard touchdown reception from Shelby Rogers to Tyler Thomison. Gutierrez nailed his second PAT with 10:44 remaining in the second quarter.
Mabank found a way to get on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter as Roberts hit a 28-yard field goal to cut the lead to 16-3.
After stopping the Bears' offense on three straight passing plays, Mabank looked to put points on the board as Thorne connected with Dylan Scheidner for a 66-yard completion. During the play, Schneider caught the ball on the left sideline and reversed field and was tackled on the Brownsboro 1-yard line.
Following a fumble, the drive stalled when Gerod Cason caught a Corey Thompson pass in the back of the end zone but Mabank was called for an illegal man downfield that wiped out the touchdown.
Roberts then attempted a 30-yard field goal but missed it to keep the Bears up by the score of 16-3.
On the Bears' opening drive of the third quarter, BHS marched 70 yards in eight plays as Johntae Walker barrelled his way in from 3-yards out for the 23-3 lead. Walker later scored from five yards out to put the nail in the coffin at 29-3 with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Mabank added one more score as Thorne capped off an eight-play drive with a three-yard run. The Panthers went for two and connected as Jhon Leon caught a Corey Thompson pass in the back of the end zone with 9:49 remaining in the game.
Rogers led the way for the Bears' with 207 yards passing on 8-of-22 completions. Davonte Givens caught four passes for 110 yards with no touchdowns.
Thorne led the way for the Panthers' with 168 yards passing on 11-of-33 completions with 2 interceptions.
Brownsboro will host Mineola next week for homecoming, while Mabank travels to Canton. Both games are set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
