JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL: 'Must' or bust (w/conference standings)

TVCC has to beat Blinn to stay alive in SWJCFC playoff hunt

ATHENS — Two games remain on the 2012 Trinity Valley Community College football schedule.

The Cardinals must win both to have any chance at making the Southwest Junior College Football Conference playoffs.

But first, they’ve got to win Saturday when the Blinn Buccaneers come to town for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Bruce Field. It will be Homecoming Day for the Cardinals (2-5, 0-4 in conference), who need a win to ensure next week’s regular-season finale against Tyler means something.

Homecoming ceremonies will begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Bucs (2-3, 1-2) are sure to be a little bit surly after last week’s 28-27 loss to the Kilgore College Rangers. Blinn held a 27-7 lead with 10 minutes left before watching the conference leader rally to win.

That loss put Blinn in the bottom half of the conference standings and in a three-way tie at 1-2 for the fourth and final playoff spot with Tyler and Cisco. In other words, the Bucs — like the Cardinals — need a win Saturday to stay afloat in what could become a chaotic playoff race.

The Cardinals dropped their fifth-straight game last week with a 24-10 setback against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Despite several key injuries, the Cardinals turned in a solid defensive performance. D’Vonn Brown had two sacks while Austin Burtnett, Darius White and Kewan Alfred had one each. Quincy Russell, Alfred and Raphael Cox batted down one pass each.

In other conference games this Saturday, Cisco is at Tyler and Kilgore travels to NEO.
