The year of the Hornet

Aguilera, Jefferson named athletes of the year for Athens High School

Athens — The student athletes of 20 Athens High School sports teams wrapped up the year with one last goodbye to a great season.

On Monday, they were recognized for those accomplishment during the athletic banquet at the Cain Center.

Seniors Cari Aguilera and Chris Jefferson received the female and male athlete of the year awards.

Aguilera and Jefferson receive a $750 scholarship from Coca-Cola for being named the top athletes.

Aguilera is attending Eastfield College for volleyball. Jefferson is attending Trinity Valley Community College for football.

Girls coordinator Dee Evans gave the introduction for Aguilera.

“This young lady has been a four year letterman in volleyball, basketball and track and does great in athletics and in her school work,” Evans said. “She is one of the most coachable athletes that I have had to work with.”

Aguilera was named the MVP in volleyball and basketball.

For Jefferson, the award was given to him by coach Paul Essary.

“This young man always works hard in everything that he does,” Essary said. “He is a defensive player that gave it everything he had. He is a great singer in the choir program also and I am very proud of him.”

Jefferson was named the co-linebacker of the year, a team captain in football and the defensive MVP in basketball.

Superintendent Blake Stiles presented the coach of the year honors to Paul Essary and Gerald Anthony.

The football and boys basketball teams went undefeated in district play as the football team finished 10-1.

The basketball team finished the year at 29-2 after losing to Kilgore in the playoffs.

Senior Garrett Conley was presented with a $500 baseball scholarship from Mike Head — in honor of Fred “Bud” Head Jr.

Conley is attending East Texas Baptist University in the fall. Conley was named the most valuable player for the baseball team.
