Henderson County has strong finish at state track meet

Athens — The Henderson County area had a nice showing at the state track and field meet over the weekend.

The two day event was held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Of the five athletes who represented the county, they finished with one third, two fourth place finishes, an eighth place finish and a ninth place finish.

In the Class 2A girls shot put, Kemp junior Miranda Kerr finished in fourth place among the nine finishers.

Kerr finished the competition on Friday with a throw of 38 feet, 1/2 inches.

The top throw in the competition came from Salado senior Rachel Hildebrand with a toss of 39 feet, 10 inches.

In the Class 2A girls 300-meter hurdles, Eustace junior Madi Allen finished in fourth place in a time of 44.94 seconds on Friday.

The top time was set by Goliad’s  Ashtin Zamzow in a time of 44.41 seconds.

In Class A competition, Trinidad had two athletes make their first appearances to the state meet.

In the Class A, Division I boys high jump, Trinidad senior Dustin Bannister finished the competition in eighth place.

Bannister cleared 5 feet, 8 inches among the nine competitors at the meet.

The top height came from Utopia’s Luke Killough as he matched the Class A, Division II record height of 6 feet, 3 inches in last year’s state track and field meet.

Trinidad sophomore Heather Monroe rounded out the area athletes in the Class A, Division II girls shot put with a ninth place finish in Austin.

Monroe had her best throw on her fourth attempt of the competition at 31 feet, 5 3/4 inches.

Tricia Williams from Lometa broke her previous record with a throw of 44 feet, 1 1/2 inch to win the state title. She threw 42, 10 1/4 inches last year.
