AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Nine Cross Roads Lady Cats named to all-district softball team

CROSS ROADS — Nine Cross Roads Lady Cats were named to the District 19-A all-district softball team released on Monday.

The team was led by freshman Calley Cole — who was named the Newcomer of the Year.

Receiving first team recognition was Kaitlin Gorden, Rachel Henry a nd Kelsi Lookabaugh.

Three players were also named to the second team as Laura Waldo, Kennedy Rogers and Kaitlyn Smith were named to the team.

Honorable mention recognition went to Kelsie Carter and Savannah Himes.

Defensive Player of the Year: Maci Pollard — Cayuga

Queen of the Circle: Katie Greve — Neches

Softball tournament  set for June 8

A benefit softball tournament is set for June 8 for a local teenager named Johnathan Stovall.

Stovall is a 19-year old who has been diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma cancer.

The tournament is set for the Cain Center ball fields with a start time of 9 a.m. with no deadline for registration.

The cost is $150 per team with a double elimination format.

Donations are also welcome for Stovall.

Stovall will be going to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa for treatment.

Swim lessons held at Country Club

For the sixth year in a row, the Athens Country Club will host summer swim instruction for children in Henderson County.

Swim lessons are for infants, preschoolers (3-5 years) and youth through 12 years of age. Classes are run in two week sessions beginning at 9 a.m.  Tuesday through Friday with Monday being used as a make-up day in case of bad weather (classes for July 4th will be held Mon 6/24 thru Wed. 7/3).

Class fee is $45 for each two week session.

Lessons concentrate on working with the student in their swimming skills and safety, and are designed to work with the swimmer based on their ability starting with pre-school, beginner, and advance beginner.

Classes are taught by Robert and Carol Morton who have been teaching youth swimming for over 30 years.

Both of the Morton’s have held certifications in Red Cross WSI, Lifesaving, YMCA pre-school, youth, Lifesaving and Lifesaving instructor.
