AREA BASKETBALL: CRHS takes care of Big Sandy, 26-22

CROSS ROADS — The No. 20-ranked Cross Roads Ladycats improved to 11-6 on the year with a 26-22 win over Big Sandy Tuesday night.

Paulette Burgess led the way for Cross Roads with nine points and nine rebounds, Cynai Wilson finished with six points, Pepper Norwood had five points, Kourtney Hazelip finished with four points and Rebecca Kramer had two points and seven rebounds.

Coach Giff Durham said Sara Spivey, Kelsi Lookabaugh, Avery Newman, and Cayla Penix also contributed in the win.

In the junior varsity contest, Cross Roads won 32-14 as Jennifer Bradford led all scorers with 16 points.

Over the weekend, Cross Roads competed in the Central Heights tournament and finished 2-1 overall losing to Nacogdoches in overtime 40-34 on Friday.

CRHS will wrap up the non-district portion of their schedule on Friday with a road game at Trinidad.

The varsity only contest is set for 5 p.m.

Malakoff girls thump Eustace 53-19

MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Lady Tigers picked up a district win over Eustace Friday night at home.

Malakoff held Eustace to single digit scoring in every quarter and held a 31-10 lead at the half.

Hayley Thomas was the leading scorer for Malakoff with 13 points, while teammate Hazel Puemple had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kiana Reed had a strong game for the Lady Tigers with eight points, 13 rebounds and seven steals.

Shelby Marcom led the way for Eustace with six points.

“It was a great team effort,” Malakoff coach Emily Martinez said. “I am really proud of our girls.”

Malakoff will be at home on Friday against Palmer. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

AMS teams go 2-2 in basketball action

The Athens middle school teams went 2-2 in Monday night basketball action against Canton.

The eighth grade teams won both of their games as the ‘A’ team won 50-24, while the ‘B’ team won 24-10.

The seventh grade teams lost both of their games as the ‘A’ team lost 35-33, while the ‘B’ team lost 19-4.

In the eighth grade ‘A’ teams win, the Hornets ran their record to 5-1 on the season.

The Hornets were paced by Javiry Bowman's 15 points and Gary Lyons with eight points.

In the ‘B’ team win, the Hornets were led by Jordan Mayhall's six points and Victor Dawson and Alec Scott each pitched in five points.

The seventh grade ‘A’ team was led in scoring by Cameron Ray with 14 points and Quintavian Gardner with 10 points.

BHS Bearette event set for Dec. 27-28

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bearette Doubleheader is set for Dec. 27-28 at Brownsboro High School.

The doubleheader will feature all three Brownsboro teams plus teams from Whitehouse, Van and Palestine Westwood.

The Brownsboro freshman will begin the action at 11 a.m. against Whitehouse.

The junior varsity team will take to the court against Westwood at 1:30, followed by the varsity against Westwood at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Brownsboro freshman will take on the Whitehouse junior varsity at 11 a.m.

The junior varsity will face Van at 1:30 p.m., while the varsity will take on Whitehouse at 4:30 p.m.

The subvarsity games will be seven-minute quarters and they will use officials from the Tyler Chapter during the games.
