BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bears opened up the Great East Texas Shootout like a team on a mission as they blew out the Arp Tigers, 61-20, Thursday afternoon.

“We have some young guys that are starting to mature and if we continue to play like we did today we should be good in the tournament,” Brownsboro coach Tobin Reid said.

With the win, the Bears evened their record at 4-4 on the year and were scheduled to  play the All Saints Trojans last night in the winner’s bracket.

BHS is scheduled to play at either 7 p.m. in the winner’s bracket against Malakoff or Bullard or with a loss they will play at 1 p.m. today against the loser of that game.

The Bears were led in scoring by Will Bailey with 11 points, while Jared Bragdon and Logan Compton scored 10 points each in the win.

Brownsboro opened up the game with a very fast pace as they jumped out to an 18-6 lead after the opening eight minutes of the game.

After a basket by Arp’s Kalik Hines to open the game, the Bears went to the shooting game of Tamrick Pace and Bailey for an 8-2 lead with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

The Bears defense continued to be tough after a basket by Arp’s Clay Seiber cut the lead to 11-6 with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

The Bears then put together an impressive run that lasted over four minutes to give them a double-digit lead.

The Bears extended the lead to 22-6 on a basket by Bailey off an assist from Quentin McKenzie with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Arp was able to end the run as Mykel Frost drained a three-pointer with six minutes remaining.

Following that basket, BHS was able to hold Arp scoreless for the remainder of the first half to put the game out of reach.
