FRIDAY NIGHT FLASHBACK: Mabank beats Brownsboro 17-6 in District 15-3A opener

BROWNSBORO — The Mabank Panthers found just the right time to put the nail in the coffin against the Brownsboro Bears Friday night in a 17-6 District 15-3A opening win at Bears Stadium.

With the win, coach Jared Wingfield's team improved to 2-4 on the season, while coach Jason Hooker's team dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Mabank gained some revenge on the Bears following last year's 36-11 loss to Brownsboro at Panther Field.

The big loss for the Bears came at halftime when wideout Will Bailey was not on the field for the Bears and did not return in the second half of play.

After a back-and-forth first half with neither team finding any kind of momentum, the Panthers were able to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room on a 34-yard field goal by Pedro Valdez.

Brownsboro turned the ball over on the opening drive of the third quarter as Jared Bragdon fumbled the snap and Mabank came up with the recovery.

Mabank was able to score 14 unanswered points as Dalton Reeder hauled in a 9-yard pass from quarterback Cody Thompson with 5:57 remaining in the third quarter. Valdez nailed the PAT good for the 10-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Bears mishandled the ball as Mabank once again pounced on the ball at the Brownsboro 19-yard line.

The Panthers then went on a four-play, 19-yard drive as Garrett Holcomb found Dylan Schneider in the  back of the endzone to give the Panthers a 17-0 lead with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter.

Brownsboro was able to get on the score board with 2:27 remaining as Damien Thompson pounded his way into the end zone from 9-yards out for the 17-6 finale. On the extra point attempt, the ball was mishandled before the Bears' had a chance to attempt the kick.

The Panthers were led by Clay Gaddis with 85 yards rushing on 22 carries, while Cody Thompson went 8-of-18 for 95 yards passing with one interception.

For the Bears, Thompson had 10 carries for 44 yards and one touchdown. Bragdon finished 13-of-25 passing for 110 yards with one interception.
