The Athens Review
This season, the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals have faced two top five teams in the nation in the first five games of the season.
The Cardinals (3-2, 2-1) narrowly lost to Iowa Western, 24-17, in the opener and on Saturday night, they knocked off the No. 1-ranked Navarro College Bulldogs 35-7 at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana.
“The defense dominated and they played great,” seven-year head coach Brad Smiley said. “Especially early in the game with the rain and our kicking game did not do a great job of keeping them backed up like we should.”
The loss for Navarro snapped a 29-game regular season home winning streak that started in 2006. It also stopped a stretch of 23 straight home conference game victories.
Saturday’s game against Navarro resembled last year’s rain soaked contest — a game in which Navarro won 21-10 at Bruce Field.
The game was postponed for 30 minutes prior to the kickoff due to lightning in the area.
The rain played a factor as both teams had a difficult time adjusting in the first half as TVCC held a 7-0 lead at the intermission.
The lone touchdown came on a 22-yard pass completion from Ryan Polite to Jarvis Baxter with 3:39 remaining in the first half.
Smiley said coming into the game, he was hoping his defense could contain Navarro running backs Tim Wright and Cameron Washington.
Wright finished the game with 22 carries for 131 yards and one touchdown, while Washington finished with 12 carries for 51 yards.
“We held them to seven points and I am happy with that,” Smiley said. “They are a good football team and they have a great rushing attack. The fact that we held them to seven points and their yardage was yardage smardage.”
In the second half, the Cardinals put the game away scoring the final 28 points.
TVCC running backs Marquel McNac and Luis Lopez scored on runs of 56 and one-yard respectively.
Polite also threw two touchdown passes to Tata Green for 37-yards and Trent Momon for 11 yards.
The defense held Navarro’s backup quarterback Alex Allen in check as he went 12-of-24 for 59 yards.
TVCC continues the road trip Saturday night at Northeastern Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
