AREA VOLLEYBALL: Athens wins district volleyball opener over Mineola in five games

MINEOLA — The Athens Lady Hornets snapped a two-match losing streak Tuesday night with a five-game win over Mineola in the District 15-3A opener.

With the win, coach Liz Ramsey’s team is now 9-11 overall and 1-0 in district play.

Athens won by scores of 18-25, 25-13, 25-15, 22-25 and  15-6.

In junior varsity action, Mineola won in three games by scores of 16-25, 25-21 and 25-21.

The Lady Hornets will have the night off tonight and will return to action Tuesday night against Van.

The freshman and junior varsity will begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow at AHS gymnasium.

Malakoff picks up district win Tuesday

MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Lady Tigers picked up a district win over Faith Family Tuesday night.

Malakoff won by scores of 25-4, 25-6 and 25-8.

The Lady Tigers will be in Oak Cliff tonight for a contest with Life Oak Cliff at 4:30 p.m.

CRHS takes down Trinidad on Tuesday

TRINIDAD — The Cross Roads LadyCats improved to 15-8 overall and 3-1 in district play Tuesday night with a win over Trinidad.

Coach Giff Durham’s squad won in three games by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-16.

The LadyCats return to action Saturday against Dawson with junior varsity action starting at 10 a.m.

Brownsboro loses district opener to Canton Eaglettes

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bearettes dropped its District 15-3A opener to Canton Tuesday night.

Coach Becky Daughtry’s squad lost by scores of 25-18, 25-14, 17-25 and 25-22 in varsity action.

Leading the way for the Bearettes were: LaDae Luqman with eight kills and one dig, Bailey McDonald with two kills and 12 digs.

Brownsboro’s Madison Montgomery had three kills, 10 assists, eight digs and two aces and Lexie Houston had five kills and one ace.

Amber Walker had one kill for Brownsboro, while teammates, Devon Carver had one kill, 16 assists and six digs, Meagan Gailey had five kills and five digs.

Brittany Knippers had two kills and 11 digs, Reagan Allen had three digs, Leanna Walker had one dig and Williams had a dig and an ace.

In the junior varsity match, Brownsboro won by scores of 25-18, 15-25 and 25-20.

The Canton freshman team defeated Brownsboro by scores of 18-25, 25-16 and 25-19.

Brownsboro has Friday night off and will host Mineola next Tuesday with the freshman and junior varsity starting at 5 p.m.
