HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mabank wins Battle of Cedar Creek Lake, 24-17, over Kemp

MABANK — The Mabank Panthers picked up it's first win of the 2013 season with a 27-14 win over rival Kemp Friday night at Panthers Stadium.

Mabank (1-3) senior Dylan Schneider put the game away for the Panthers in the second half with the game-winning touchdown and the insurance touchdown with 1:03 remaining in the game.

Following a scoreless third quarter in which Kemp held a 14-13 lead following a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Calbert Hukill, Schneider found an opening in the Yellowjackets defense and blasted his way 32-yards for the touchdown on a reception from junior quarterback Cody Thompson.

The first three drives for both teams in the second half saw interceptions as Mabank's Dalton Reeder picked off two Corey Watkins passes.

Kemp (0-4) got an interception of its own as Watkins intercepted a Thompson pass deep in Yellowjackets territory.

The opening score of the game came with 8:16 remaining in the opening quarter as Pedro Valdez blasted a 45-yard field goal through the uprights for the early 3-0 lead.

Kemp then put together a nice drive with a 19-yard touchdown run by Matt House with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter for the 7-3 lead. Forrest Summerhill booted the PAT good.

Mabank then countered to take the lead back in the second quarter as Reeder hauled in a six-yard touchdown reception from Thompson for the 10-7 lead. Valdez booted his second PAT good with 11:54 remaining in the first half.

Valdez would then give the Panthers a 13-7 lead as he blasted a 37-yard field goal through the uprights for the 13-7 lead with 1:08 remaining in the first half.
