BROWNSBORO —
The Crandall Pirates won the boys crown and the T.K. Gorman Lady Crusaders grabbed the girls championship Saturday to conclude the Great East Texas Shootout.
The Brownsboro Bears, who suffered their only tournament loss Friday night to eventual runner-up Bullard, finished in third place with a 43-31 win over Sunnyvale on Saturday.
Crandall claimed the boys title with a 71-34 win over Bullard.
Gorman took the top trophy in the girls bracket by upsetting the Martins Mill Lady Mustangs, 54-48. Martins Mill, the two-time defending tournament champion, is the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A.
The Athens Lady Hornets finished the tournament 2-2, having defeated Chapel Hill on Friday, 52-40, and losing to Rains on Saturday, 47-44.
Demi Cumby scored 23 points and Caridad Aguilera pitched in 22 in the win over Chapel Hill. Athens trailed, 12-5, after the first quarter and 24-18 at half, but scored 20 third-quarter points to grab the lead.
Cumby scored 31 of the Lady Hornets’ points in the loss to Rains. Allison Kalawe added six points.
In Friday night’s semifinal loss to Bullard, the Bears got 14 points from Davonte Givens and seven points from Jared Bragdon. Bullard was led by Corbin Howard, who scored a game-high 18 points.
The Brownsboro Bear-ettes wrapped up their tournament with a 46-23 loss to Neches, the defending state champ in Class 1A Division II.
The Kemp Yellowjackets, the other Henderson County area team in the tournament, finished 0-3 with a 45-37 loss to Longview Pine Tree on Friday and a 55-39 loss to Tyler All Saints on Saturday. Brownsboro beat Kemp on Thursday.
