TVCC keeps streak alive with unexpected help from Eustace grad

ATHENS — The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals almost didn’t get to start Saturday’s game against the Austin Elite club team.

It turned out to be one of their most impressive wins of the season.

The Lady Cardinals, playing with just five players, came away with a 100-59 win over Elite at Cardinal Gym. No. 3 TVCC is now 11-0.

An altercation during last Friday’s win over Northeastern Oklahoma left the Lady Cards with just four players to suit up Saturday. While a game can continue with four players on one team, it can’t start with only four.

To keep from forfeiting for its first loss of the season, head coach Elena Lovato recruited the services of TVCC volleyball player Catania Grant, a freshman from Eustace.

With Grant rounding out the necessary five, the Lady Cards rolled. Shlonte Allen led the way for TVCC with 33 points, 21 rebounds, six assists, six steals and five blocks. Savannah Carter had 28 points and 26 rebounds, Krystle Henderson finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists and Kyhonta Doughty scored eight points.

Grant, who hadn’t played basketball since high school, finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

TVCC 86. Houston Blaze 76

The TVCC Cardinals moved to 8-2 on the season with an 86-76 win over the Houston Blaze club team Saturday at Cardinal Gym.

Carl Porter led the scoring charge 16 points. Four other Cardinals were in double figures — Josh Gentry had 12, Dominique Elliott scored 11 and Karon Phillips and Mike Miller finished with 10 points each.

Head coach Kris Baumann’s Cardinals will try to improve to 2-0 in Region XIV Conference Wednesday when they host Lamar State-Port Arthur in a 7 p.m. tip at Cardinal Gym.
