NEW SUMMERFIELD —
The LaPoynor Flyers improved to 4-0 on the season and won the New Summerfield Hot House Invitational Tournament.
Head coach Dean Nuckolls watched his team claim a series of impressive wins — including an opening-round 57-56 win over Class 4A Texas High. In that contest, James Jackson had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Deon Johnson had eight assists and Logan McClelland had seven assists. Coy Gonzales added 12 points.
The Flyers moved on to the finals with a 67-52 win over Laneville. Jackson posted another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Octavious Crear added 14. Gonzales had 10 points.
With Roxton having to leave the tournament early, the Flyers ended up facing Martinsville in the championship, claiming a 62-49 victory. Johnson led the way with 11 points, Crear and Ashton Abendroth had 10 and Jackson had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Earlier in the week, the Flyers claimed a 93-38 win over Dallas Gateway. Mason Motal led thew way with 25 points and six boards, Crear had 20 points, four rebounds and four assists and Jackson had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
