SALINA, Kan. —
A third inning push from the Canton Eagles was too much for the Athens Hornets to overcome Tuesday night, falling 11-5 in non-district action.
“They just had a really big third inning and we couldn’t capitalize when we needed to,” Athens Coach Tony Sikes said. “They scored six runs in that inning. We had some really good hits on the night but that third inning was just hard to bounce back from.”
Jack Barkley was on the mound for the Hornets, droping his record to 4-1. Athens fell to 7-4 with the loss.
The Hornets are scheduled to travel to Groesbeck for a 4 p.m. game Friday. It’s one final dress rehearsal before district play opens Tuesday against Crockett at Hornet Field. Tuesday’s game is set to start at 6 p.m.
“We really would like to get a good crowd out there for the district opener,” Sikes said. “We really need all the help we can get to get off to a good start in district action.”
Some of the hits from the Hornets came from Matt Jordan, who recorded his sixth home run of they year. He also had a single.
“Matt is really hitting the ball well right now,” Sikes said. I just hope it keeps up during district play. They are all really hitting the ball good right now.”
Others hitting against Canton were Hunter Choat, a double, Oscar Valdez, double, and Luke Soloman, single.
