The Athens Lady Hornets lost a heartbreaker, 3-2, Tuesday night against the Canton Lady Eagles in District 15-3A play.
With the loss, first year head coach Jamie Poteetes’ Lady Hornets are now 11-13 overall and 1-7 in District 15-3A play.
Canton scored the winning run on a walkoff double by Amanda Riley — which plated Ellie Vestal from third base on the very first pitch for the 3-2 finale.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Haley Durden led off the inning with a standup double, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Josee McNeece that moved Durden to third.
Hannah Windham then worked a walk over Canton starter Jenna Stanley to put runners on the corners with one out.
Durden then scored the first run of the game on a throwing error by the catcher Amanda Riley for the 1-0 lead.
Krystal Davis then smacked a single off Stanley and advanced to second to put runners on in scoring position as Windham was held up at third base.
Windham later scored in the inning for the 2-0 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Canton put a run together off Windham as Ellie Vestal reached on a single.
Vestal later reached second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball.
With two outs in the inning, Canton’s Emily Bell smacked a single off Windham for the 2-1 deficit.
Canton was able to tie the game up at, 2-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs as Windham struck out Sam Neal and Lauryn Reynolds.
Vestal walked to start the rally, followed by a wild pitch which put her on second base. Stanley then walked to put runners on first and second.
Bell then smacked a deep single to left field — which scored Vestal from second for the 2-2 tie.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Canton looked like they would be able to gain the lead but left runners stranded on second and third.
Windham was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout of Neal and a ground out by Lauryn Reynolds as Cain threw to Red for the out.
Windham finished with a complete game six hitter with six strikeouts and five walks in the game.
She also gave up three runs — all earned — and threw 109 pitches in the ball game.
The Lady Hornets had a hit from Durden, Krystal Davis who went 1-for-3, Cain and Carson Sikes.
Durden went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a double and a walk.
Athens also had stolen bases from Windham and Cain.
Canton was led at the plate by Bell — who went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Athens travels to Van Friday night for a 7 p.m. first pitch and will wrap up the season next Tuesday night against the Mabank Lady Panthers for senior night.
Senior night festivities for lone senior Windham will take place after the game, according to Poteete.
In junior varsity action, the Athens Lady Hornets lost 12-2 to Canton.
