Athens —
Athens High School senior Hannah Windham signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to play softball for Western Texas College.
The Lady Westerners finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 23-34 under head coach Rome McNamary.
“The coach drew me to the school because he is very nice and I like him a lot,” Windham said. “I am going to pitch for them and possibly play a little bit of outfield.”
Athens head coach Jamie Poteete said Windham's signing is big for the school this year.
“It is super exciting,” Poteete said. “Hannah is setting a standard for those younger girls that have been watching her play for so many years. This is showing that you can go on into college and carry on the dream of playing softball.”
Windham was named to the District 17-3A All-District first team last season and was also named a Co-MVP at the annual athletic banquet last year.
Poteete said Windham's senior season should be a strong season for her.
“I think she is going to hit the weight room hard and be a solid player for our team,” Poteete said. “I think she will have an outstanding season and she is one of only two seniors on the team.”
Windham said her main goal for this upcoming season is to help out her teammates.
“I just want to get my team ready for next year,” Windham said. “I want to get them to their highest potential for the upcoming freshman and the new people that come up.”
