Athens —
The Athens Lady Hornets opened up the scrimmage portion of their soccer season with their annual alumni scrimmage on Tuesday night at Bruce Field.
Both teams played to a 0-0 tie and coach Dedra Jackson said the team has some areas they need to work on in their upcoming scrimmages.
“We need to work on aggressiveness and getting to the ball,” coach Dedra Jackson said. “We also need to talk while we are on the field.”
The Lady Hornets will have another scrimmage Friday night against Kaufman and Kilgore at Bruce Field.
The scrimmage is scheduled to begin around 4:30 p.m.
“I would like to see more play on the ball,” Jackson said. We could not hold on to the ball against the alumni. We need to be able to get the ball down the field more during the games.”
BOYS
AHS Alumni 2, Athens 1
Athens opened up their scrimmage season with a 2-1 loss to the Alumni Tuesday night at Bruce Field.
Coach Jonathan Ryal said the Hornets seemed nervous starting out in their first action of the year.
“There is no shame in losing to the Athens alumni,” Ryal said. “We are not going to face a team that is smart soccer wise than the alumni. I feel very confident about how we are going to be this year.”
Mic Maldonado scored both of the goals for the alumni, while Cesar Ortega scored the lone goal for the Hornets.
He said the first scrimmage helped in deciding his lineup for their first game Jan. 10 in the Kilgore tournament.
“I got about three spots I still have to figure out,” Ryal said. “My goal keeping I am much more confident about it than I was before the night started.”
