AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: AHS tennis team wins opener over Henderson 12-6; faces Grace Sept. 24

Athens — The Athens tennis team won it’s opening scrimmage Thursday over Henderson 12-6.

“I was really proud of the way the kids played,” AHS tennis coach Julie Bell said. “They came out strong and were able to get a nice win to start the season.”

In boys singles Nolan Whitley, Jake Bywaters, Andrew Young, Antoine Dumont, Hayden Gore, and Jonathan Bywaters won their matches.

In girls singles, Leah Eldore, Katy Lunceford, and Jessica Moore picked up wins.

In boys doubles, the team of Whitley/Bywaters and  Ellis/Bywaters picked up wins, while the girls doubles team of Eldore and Lunceford picked up wins.

The tennis team will next play Grace Community on Sept 24 at Tyler Junior College.

TVCC-Kilgore game webcast tonight

Saturday’s Southwest Junior College Football Conference opener between the TVCC Cardinals and Kilgore Rangers will be streamed online.

TVCC coach Brad Smiley said the game can be found at www.ihigh.com/tvcc.

Smiley said he would like to see a large fan base in Kilgore for the first road game of the year.

The game will also be broadcast on KCKL radio at 95.9 FM starting at 6:30 p.m.

MHS subvarsity sweeps Kerens

MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Tigers subvarsity teams swept Kerens Thursday night.

The JV won 48-0, while the eighth grade Tigers won 22-6 and the seventh grade team won by a score of 14-6.
