HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Starting off strong

Trinidad Trojans open season with back-to-back shutout wins over Bynum and Greenville Christian

TRINIDAD — With a new coach at the helm of at Trinidad in Tom McVey, the Trojans are putting up numbers that would make any coach happy.

After the first two weeks of the season, the Trojans have outscored it’s opponents, 104-0.

The Trojans opened up the season with a 57-0 win over Bynum and continued their hot start with another big win Friday night.

The latest win was a 47-0 victory over Greenville Christian in three quarters Saturday afternoon in Greenville.

“Right now, we are looking pretty good,” Trinidad coach Tom McVey said. “We handled Bynum pretty easy and with Greenville Christian it took us until late in the third quarter to 45 them.” has the Trojans ranked No. 28 in the state of Texas heading into Friday’s night contest against Coolidge. The contest is set to kickoff at Trojan Field at 7:30 p.m.

The Trojans are favored by 45 points this week over Coolidge according to

“Coolidge is going to be better and they will be quicker,” McVey said. “I think athletically they will be better than what we have seen the first two weeks. They are a run-and-gun team and hopefully they won’t be able to stop us.”

McVey said in the first two games of the season, defensive coach Travis Rhoten has been able to change up formations to confuse opponents  each week.

“I am not naive to think this is going to continue,” McVey said. “I don’t ask for the guys to be perfect but I want them to score more than the opponents do on us.”

He said every player has performed well this season and recognized Jordon Wright, Chris Bannister, Jovante Hornbuckle and Matt Snider for their play this week.

He also recognized the play of his quarterback during Saturday’s win.

“T.J. McVey has done a good job,” McVey said. “He went 6-of-7 passing with 114 yards and two touchdowns last week against Greenville Christian.”

Trinidad looks to return to the playoffs after losing to Jonesboro 116-80 last year.
